With Nutanix being rather new to the Hypervisor space, backup support from backup vendors has been rather thin on the ground – Commvault being the only choice. This has probably prevented a number of Nutanix customers from migrating their Vmware or Hyper-V environments across to AHV.
Well, the playing field has finally expanded with Rubrik announcing that their latest software release, code named ‘Alta’. Rubrik has long supported Vmware Vpshere running on Nutanix but will now natively support Nutanix Acropolis via the new Nutanix REST 3.0 API.
The integration leverages Nutanix VSS snaphots via the Nutanix Guest Tools (NGT) to quiesce the virtual machine. The amazing thing about this, NGT does not cause VM stun, I say again no VM stun. This is a major break through, as Vmware based snaphots cause VM Stun and this has long been a pain point for every Virtualisation engineer. This has prevented engineers running backup during production hours especially when running user-centric work loads, such as Citrix Xenapp.
Some of the main benefits of the Rubrik and Nutanix AHV integration include:
- automated protection & restore workflow
- secure replication or archival to other sites
- Rubrik Core Capabilities like global search, erasure coding, and on-demand reporting
- scale-as-you-go architecture
Here is how it works,
The beautiful thing about Rubrik and Nutanix is they share a similar DNA, they both make the complex simple. I really can’t wait to get my hands on this update.
